How to get Google reviews for your business in Nigeria

Reviews are the one part of your Google presence you cannot build yourself. That is exactly why they carry so much weight.

22 September 2026

Two businesses appear next to each other on Google Maps. One has eleven reviews and the other has none. Most people will choose the one with eleven, and they will not think of it as a decision.

Reviews are the part of local visibility that cannot be produced by the business itself, which is precisely why they count. Everything else on your listing is something you typed.

Before you ask anybody: the listing has to work

You cannot receive reviews without a verified Google Business Profile. If yours is unverified, unclaimed or does not exist, that comes first, and verification can take a while, so start it before you start asking.

While you are in there, make sure the basics are right, because a reviewer who cannot find the listing cannot leave the review. Correct name, correct category, correct address or service area, correct hours, a working phone number, and a link to your website.

How to actually ask

Almost every business that says it cannot get reviews has never directly asked. The ones that get them ask, at the right moment, in a way that takes the customer ten seconds.

Ask when the person is happiest. Not a month later. At delivery, at collection, when they say thank you, when they tell you they are pleased. That moment is short and it is the only moment that reliably converts into a review.

Send the link, not instructions. "Search for us on Google and leave a review" asks the customer to do work, and they will not. Google provides a short review link from inside your Business Profile. Send that. One tap, straight to the stars.

Ask by whatever channel you already use with them. In this market that is usually WhatsApp, and that is fine. The best channel is the one they already reply to.

Ask in plain words. Something like: "Thank you for your order. If you have a moment, a quick review on Google helps small businesses like ours a lot. Here is the link." Short, honest, no pressure. Then leave it.

Make it routine rather than a campaign. A business that asks every satisfied customer will end the year in a very different position from one that ran a review drive in March. Build it into whatever you already do at the end of a job.

What not to do, and why it matters more than you think

Do not buy reviews. They are sold openly and they are a bad trade. Google removes them, sometimes along with genuine ones, and a listing that has been actioned for fake reviews is a problem that takes far longer to recover from than it took to create.

Do not offer a discount in exchange for a review. It breaches Google's policy, and it produces reviews that read as bought even when the sentiment is real. Offering something for feedback generally is different from paying for a public rating.

Do not ask only the customers you expect to be positive. Beyond the policy question, it gives you a rating you cannot learn anything from.

Do not write them yourself. From your own devices, from staff accounts, from family. It is more detectable than people assume, and it is the same risk as buying them.

Reply to all of them

Replies are public, and they are read by people deciding whether to use you. A short thank you on a good review costs nothing and shows the business is attended to.

On a bad one, the reply is not for the reviewer. It is for the next person who reads it. Thank them, acknowledge the specific thing, say what you have done about it, and offer to continue the conversation privately. Do not argue, do not explain at length, and do not imply they are lying even if you are certain they are.

A calm, specific reply under a one star review often does more for a stranger's confidence than several five star reviews with no replies at all.

What to do about a review you believe is false

You can report it through your Business Profile, and Google will assess it against its policies. Be realistic: removal is not quick and not guaranteed, and reviews are usually only removed when they breach a policy rather than because they are unfair.

The more reliable answer is volume. One bad review among four is a pattern. One among forty is an incident, and most readers treat it that way.

How many do you need

There is no threshold worth quoting, and anybody who gives you a specific number is guessing. What is observable is the comparison: buyers judge your review count against the other businesses shown next to you, not against an absolute standard. Questions

How do I get more Google reviews for my business?

Ask satisfied customers at the moment they are happiest, send them the short review link from your Google Business Profile rather than instructions, use the channel you already message them on, and make it routine rather than a one off campaign.

Is it against the rules to offer a discount for a Google review?

Yes. Offering something in exchange for a public rating breaches Google's policy, and reviews obtained that way tend to read as bought even when the sentiment is real.

Should I reply to bad reviews?

Yes, and the reply is for the next person reading it, not for the reviewer. Thank them, acknowledge the specific issue, say what you have changed, and offer to continue privately. Do not argue.

Can I get a false review removed from Google?

You can report it through your Business Profile and Google will assess it against its policies, but removal is neither quick nor guaranteed. Reviews are usually only removed when they breach a policy rather than because they are unfair.

How many Google reviews does a small business need?

There is no number worth quoting. Buyers judge your review count against the other businesses shown beside you in the same category and area, so look at who appears next to you and work from there.
