Do Facebook and Instagram ads work in Nigeria

They work, and more reliably than search for a lot of Nigerian businesses. The money is usually lost somewhere other than the targeting, which is where everyone looks.

Ask around Lagos and you will hear both that Facebook and Instagram ads are the only thing that works, and that they are a way to set money on fire. Both are true, and which one you get depends on things that are decided before a single naira is spent.

This is the companion to what we wrote about Google Ads in Nigeria, and the difference between them is the whole point.

Why paid social often beats search here

Search advertising catches somebody who is already looking. Social advertising interrupts somebody who was not. That difference decides which one suits you.

For a lot of Nigerian businesses, especially in fashion, food, beauty, home goods and anything visual, there is simply not much search demand to catch. Nobody wakes up and types the name of a product category they have never heard of. But show them the thing, well photographed, in their feed, and demand appears.

There is a second reason, and it is practical rather than strategic. The journey from a social advert to a conversation is short here. Advert, profile, WhatsApp, sale. No website required. That is a shorter path than search advertising usually offers, and short paths convert.

Search still wins when somebody is actively looking for a service at the moment they need it. A generator repair, a lawyer, an emergency plumber. Those people are searching, not scrolling.

When it works

It works when the creative is good. On social, the advert itself does most of the work, far more than the targeting does. A clear photograph or a short video of the actual product, shot in decent light, will outperform clever audience settings every time. This is the opposite of how most people spend their effort.

It works when you know what a customer is worth. Not precisely, but enough to say whether a sale is worth a thousand naira of advertising or fifty thousand. Without that you are judging the campaign on whether the dashboard feels good.

It works when somebody answers. Paid social generates messages, and messages that sit unanswered for a day are money spent to annoy a stranger. If nobody is on the phone, do not switch the ads on.

And it works when you let it run long enough to learn. A campaign switched on for four days, judged, and switched off has taught you nothing and charged you for the privilege.

When it does not

It does not work for a considered, expensive, slow purchase where the buyer needs to research. Those people go to search.

It does not work when the destination is not ready. Sending paid traffic to an Instagram profile with no bio, no recent posts and no way to get in touch is paying for people to arrive somewhere that convinces them to leave. We wrote about what actually makes a profile work, and every point in it applies double when you are paying for the visit.

And it does not work as a substitute for having something people want. Advertising makes a good offer reach more people. It makes a bad offer fail faster and more expensively.

Where the money actually goes

Boosting instead of advertising. The boost button is the most expensive convenience on the platform. It optimises for engagement rather than for anything commercial, which is why boosted posts collect likes from people who will never buy. Running the same money through the proper ads tool, aimed at messages or sales, does a completely different job.

Interest targeting that is too clever. Stacking fifteen interests narrows the audience so far that the system cannot find enough people, and the cost per result climbs. In most Nigerian categories, a broad audience with good creative outperforms a narrow one with weak creative.

One advert, run forever. Audiences here are not enormous, so the same creative gets shown to the same people repeatedly until they stop seeing it. Plan for several versions from the start rather than one perfect one.

No tracking of what happened next. If the sale finishes on WhatsApp and nobody records which advert the buyer came from, you are optimising blind. It does not need a system. A note in the conversation and a weekly tally is enough to know which advert is actually producing customers rather than replies.

Payment, which stops most first attempts

The practical obstacle is the same one search advertising has. Nigerian cards are declined for international transactions more often than not, depending on bank and card, and it changes often enough that specific advice goes stale within months. Check what your own bank currently permits on international online payments before you plan a budget around it.

Set the account up under your own business, with your own payment method, and keep the ad account in your name. An agency running your advertising inside its own account is holding your data and your history, and you find out on the day you try to leave.

How to start without wasting the first month

Photograph your five best sellers properly. Write one sentence for each saying what it is and what it costs. Make sure the profile the advert points at explains the business and has a working way to message you. Decide what a customer is worth. Then run one campaign, aimed at messages, broad audience, three creative variations, for long enough to produce a real number.

That is a week of preparation and it changes the economics far more than any amount of tinkering afterwards.

Questions

Are Facebook and Instagram ads better than Google Ads in Nigeria?

Different jobs. Search catches people already looking for something. Social interrupts people who were not. For visual products with little search demand, social usually wins. For a service somebody needs urgently, search does.

Why is boosting a post a bad idea?

Boosting optimises for engagement rather than anything commercial, which is why boosted posts collect likes from people who will never buy. The same money run through the proper ads tool, aimed at messages or sales, does a different job entirely.

Can I pay for Facebook ads with a Nigerian card?

Sometimes, and it depends on your bank and card, and it changes. Confirm what your bank currently allows on international online payments before planning a budget, and keep the ad account in your own business’s name.

How long should I run a campaign before judging it?

Long enough to produce a real number rather than a feeling. Four days is not long enough to learn anything, and switching a campaign on and off repeatedly means paying for the learning more than once.
