Do Google Ads work in Nigeria

Yes, and more often than not the money is lost somewhere other than the advertising. Usually on the page the click lands on, or on clicks from people who could never have bought anything.

Google Ads works in Nigeria in the sense that you can buy clicks and they arrive. The useful question is different: under what conditions does buying those clicks make a Nigerian business money, and when does it quietly drain a budget for months.

When paid search makes sense

It makes sense when people are already searching for what you sell. Advertising sits on top of existing demand. It does not create it. If nobody is typing anything that leads to your product, paid search is the wrong channel and no amount of budget changes that.

It makes sense when you know roughly what a customer is worth to you. Not precisely, but within reason. A business that does not know whether an average customer is worth ten thousand naira or a million cannot tell whether a campaign is winning, so it will judge it on how the dashboard feels.

It makes sense when the thing the click lands on is ready. This is the one people skip. Traffic sent to a homepage that does not mention the thing that was advertised converts badly, and that is not an advertising failure, it is a destination failure.

And it makes sense when somebody answers enquiries quickly. Paid clicks that turn into messages nobody replies to for two days are the most expensive way to lose a customer available to a Nigerian business.

When it does not

Do not start with ads if your website is not indexed, has no page for the thing you sell, or takes ten seconds to load on a phone. Ads will expose all three at a cost per click.

Do not start if you cannot fund it consistently for long enough to learn anything. A campaign switched on for a week and off for a month teaches you nothing and pays for the learning twice.

And do not start if the honest answer is that you need brand awareness rather than demand capture. That is a different job with different tools.

The practical problems of paying from Nigeria

This is the part nobody writes about and it is where most first attempts stall.

Payment is the first hurdle. Nigerian cards are declined for international transactions more often than not, depending on the bank and the card, and this changes often enough that any specific advice goes stale quickly. Check what your own bank currently allows on international online payments before you plan a budget around it.

The billing currency is a decision you make once and effectively live with, and it interacts with the exchange rate in ways that affect what your budget actually buys month to month. Do not set this casually and do not let somebody else set it for you inside their own account.

There are taxes and fees that apply to digital advertising services in Nigeria, and the rules here have changed more than once in recent years. Confirm the current position with your accountant rather than with a blog post, this one included, because anything written down about Nigerian tax has a short shelf life.

The general rule: set the account up in your own company’s name, with your own payment method, and confirm every one of these in the account itself before committing a budget. Agencies that run your advertising inside their own account and bill you for it are holding your history, and you find out on the day you try to leave.

Where the money usually leaks

Clicks from people who cannot buy. In the digital marketing category, around a third of everything the search terms return is people looking for a job, a course, or how to start an agency themselves. Every one of those clicks costs the same as a buyer’s click and converts at zero. The fix is a negative keyword list, added before you spend rather than after. Words like jobs, vacancy, salary, course, training, learn and free will do most of the work in most categories.

One page for every promise. Two different adverts pointing at the same page means at least one of them is breaking a promise. If you advertise a specific service, the click should land on that service’s page.

Tracking that was never checked. A surprising number of accounts report conversions that do not exist, or miss the ones that do. If nobody has tested the tracking by submitting the form themselves and watching it arrive, the numbers on the report are decoration.

Reporting in impressions. Impressions and clicks are inputs. The only numbers that matter are what an enquiry cost and what a customer cost. Any report that does not contain those two is reporting the comfortable half.

What it costs

We will not give you a number, because the honest answer varies enormously by category and anyone quoting a single figure for Nigeria is guessing. What is worth knowing is the shape rather than the size.

Competitive categories cost more per click because other people are bidding. Your budget does not determine your cost per click, it determines how many clicks you get. And a small budget spent on a tightly defined, well targeted campaign routinely beats a larger one spread across everything, which is the most common mistake in the market.

Work it out from the other end. If a customer is worth a hundred thousand naira to you, and one in ten enquiries becomes a customer, then an enquiry is worth ten thousand, and you can afford to spend up to that for one. That calculation tells you far more than any benchmark.

Facebook and Instagram instead

Worth saying, because in Nigeria they are frequently the better first move. Search advertising catches people who are already looking. Social advertising interrupts people who are not. For a product people do not know they want, social is often cheaper and works better. For a service people search for at the moment they need it, search wins. Many Nigerian businesses should be running both, with different expectations of each.

Before you spend anything

Check that the page the click will land on actually exists and loads fast on a phone. Write the negative keyword list. Work out what a customer is worth. Make sure somebody is ready to reply to enquiries the same day.

That is a week of preparation and it changes the economics more than any amount of campaign optimisation afterwards.

Questions

Do Google Ads actually work for Nigerian businesses?

Yes, where people are already searching for what you sell, you know roughly what a customer is worth, the click lands on a relevant page, and somebody answers enquiries the same day. Where any of those is missing, the budget goes out without a result.

Can I pay for Google Ads with a Nigerian card?

Sometimes, and it depends on your bank and card, and it changes. Confirm what your own bank currently allows on international online payments before planning a budget around it, and set the account up in your company’s name with your own payment method.

What is the minimum budget for Google Ads in Nigeria?

There is no meaningful universal minimum. Work it from what a customer is worth and how many enquiries become customers. That tells you what you can afford to pay for an enquiry, which is the only number that matters.

Should I run Google Ads or Facebook and Instagram ads?

Search advertising catches people already looking for what you sell. Social advertising interrupts people who are not. For something people search for at the moment of need, search. For something they do not know they want, social. Many businesses should run both.
